Department Overview
PG&E’s Power Generation Department manages and operates the largest privately-owned hydroelectric system in the nation. These renewable electric generation resources, located mostly at high elevation in California mountain ranges including the Sierra Nevada and southern Cascade mountains include 68 powerhouses, 184 miles of canals, 41 miles of flumes, 135 miles of tunnels, 19 miles of penstocks, 99 reservoirs, and 142,000 acres of watershed lands all covered by 26 operating licenses issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).
Position Summary
Headquarter Location Flexible within the PG&E Hydro Service Territory.
Manages outages in Hydroelectric Powerhouses or Fossil Power Plants throughout the PG&E system.
PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.
A reasonable salary range is:
Bay Area Minimum: $140,000
Bay Area Maximum: $238,000

California Minimum: $133,000
California Maximum: $226,000
Responsibilities:
- Ensures the Outage Management group has a “Safety First” culture that extends to managing outages with zero RIs and zero MVIs within the outage team, Hydro Construction crews, maintenance outage support, consultants, and contractors. Ensures understanding and compliance with all environmental laws and regulations to ensure 100% environmental compliance.
- Works with the Asset Management, Planning, and Projects Engineering to efficiently bundle outage related projects by facility to minimize outages and mobilizations. Develops initial outage plans three years in advance. Determines level of outage management oversight required for each outage. Assigns outage managers twelve months in advance of planned outage start dates. Works with Outage Planning to ensure outages have the appropriate durations and timing. Work with Asset Management and Planning to reduce the amount of emergent work during an outage, i.e. viable clearance boundaries.
- Ensures all outages are concluded with a thorough Lessons Learned. Works with Outage team to apply Lessons Learned from outages consistently to future outages.
- Works with Outage team, and stakeholders to continuously develop and improve the outage management processes and procedures including cost controls, scheduling detail, scope management, materials management, and contractor management strategies.
- Develops three-year look ahead resource plans to ensure the Outage Management group is resourced to manage the future workload. Works with the controls organization to staff analysts and schedulers to support Outage team.
- Ensures planning and execution include appropriate budgets for outage management.
- Creates procedures and updates as necessary. Ensures procedures are being followed by the outage management teams,
- Effectively communicates and reports out to leadership and O&M on progress, issues and challenges.
- Actively supports resolution of issues as they arise during outage planning and execution.
- Works with department managers and directors to ensure the Outage Management group is meeting or exceeding expectations.
Manages the Outage Management work group by providing strategic and tactical vision, performance feedback, and developmental opportunities. Mentors the outage management group and sets goals and expectations.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School or GED-General Educational Development-GED Diploma
- 10+ years of experience in operations, maintenance, project management or construction management (outage-related)
- Up to 50% Travel is required to support Outage Managers and Outage Supervisors.
- Up to 50%Travel is required to meet with Area O&M teams to plan future outage.
Desired Qualifications:
- Construction Management certification
- PMI-Project Management Institute PMP-Project Management Professional certification BA/BS degree in Business Management, Engineering, or Construction Management, or related field
- First line supervision experience
- Knowledgeable each powerhouses operating requirements in respect to the associated river system and transmission system
- Knowledgeable of the Power Generation planning and budgeting processes
- Knowledgeable of the Power Generation Outage Planning process
- Knowledgeable and experience with Power Generating facility systems, structures, and components
- Knowledgeable of Power Generation’s prioritization process
- Knowledge of appropriate Technical Specifications
- Knowledgeable of the contract management process
- Knowledgeable and experience with work management processes and the SAP system
- Knowledge of project management principles and guidelines, and familiarity with industry standards
- Knowledge of Primavera (P6) scheduling software and all scheduling tools including milestone structure and work monitoring
- Ability to provide guidance to Outage Managers and Outage Supervisors on contract management, contract change order management, and claim documentation
- Ability to work collaboratively within a matrix organization
- Ability to communicate technical issues to support organizations and leadership
- Ability to recognize and react to emergent issues with the required urgency
- BA/BS degree in Business Management, Engineering, or Construction Management, or related field
