Position Summary

The Director, Strategic Sourcing, Materials role is a leadership role responsible for overseeing the strategic sourcing and procurement of all materials spend categories within an organization. This role involves developing and executing category management strategies, leading a team of category managers, and ensuring the organization achieves optimal value from its Materials procurement activities.

This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and your assigned headquarters in Oakland, OGO.

Reporting Relationship

The Director, Strategic Sourcing, Materials will report to the Chief Procurement Officer (CPO) or Vice President of Procurement.

Direct reports to this role will include Category Portfolio Managers, Category Leads, Procurement Analysts, and other materials procurement staff.

Job Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive category management strategies for all material spend categories (MRO, Industrial Equipment, Meters, Metals etc).
  • Align category strategies with the overall business objectives and procurement goals.
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings, value creation, and process improvement.
  • Ensure spend is fully documented and traceable in the system(s).
  • Understand business risk factors and minimize risk appropriately.
  • Drive SKU and Specification rationalization.

Team Management:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of category managers and procurement professionals.
  • Foster a high-performance culture within the team, encouraging innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Set team objectives and track progress.
  • Ensure the team is equipped with the necessary skills and resources to achieve their objectives.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders to understand their needs and requirements.
  • Work with stakeholders to conduct SKU and specification rationalization.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment and support for category strategies.
  • Communicate category management plans and outcomes to senior management and other key stakeholders.

Lead Strategic Sourcing Events:

  • Provide supporting analytics to identify savings opportunities and to validate realized savings.
  • Utilize Total Cost of Ownership tools to deliver best total value.
  • Lead cross-functional teams to execute RFx events.
  • Provide a common platform that communicates the scope of work and results to all stakeholders.
  • Craft and negotiate contracts, incorporating results into legal documents.
  • Provide supporting analytics to identify savings opportunities and to validate realized savings.

Supplier Management:

  • Develop and maintain strategic relationships with key suppliers and vendors.
  • Leads Supplier Business Review Process and Teams for Materials
  • Negotiate contracts and agreements to secure the best possible terms for the organization.
  • Monitor supplier performance and manage any issues or risks that arise.

Contract Management:

  • Perform Contract Management and own a contract roadmap.
  • Manage relationships with suppliers ensuring effective communication, contract compliance, and performance.
  • Ensure compliance with law and regulations for relevant sourcing activities and compliances with applicable corporate policies and procedures, including Delegation of Authority, Decision Authority, Code of Conduct, and any sourcing policies such as Ethical Conduct, Conflict of Interest, etc.

Financial Management:

  • Oversee the budgeting and financial planning for materials spend categories.
  • Track and report on category spend, savings, and other key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Ensure compliance with financial policies and procedures.

Market Analysis:

  • Conduct market research and analysis to stay informed about industry trends, market conditions, economic indices, should cost modeling and best practices.
  • Use insights gained from market analysis to inform category strategies and decision-making.

Compensation

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.  Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.​

A reasonable salary range is:

Bay Area Minimum: $167,000

Bay Area Maximum: $284,000

Background Qualifications

Minimum

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
  • 10 years of total sourcing or related industry experience.

Desired

  • MBA in business or related business field.
  • Extensive experience (typically 15+ years) in procurement and category management, with a focus on material categories (such as equipment (transformers, valves, pumps), metals, industrial MRO, etc).
  • Proven track record of developing and executing successful category management strategies, strategic sourcing and SRM.
  • Understanding of end-to-end Supply Chain, Materials Management, Quality.
  • Experience in leading and managing high-performing teams.
  • Procurement transformation and change management experience.
  • Delivered significant total cost reduction.
  • Strong negotiation skills and the ability to coach team.
  • Understanding of key sourcing processes and tools, as well as contractual and legal aspects.
  • Utilities Industry experience a plus.
  • Industrial Equipment Industry experience.
  • Has managed >$1 billion of spend.

Technical Skills

  • Excellent analytical and conceptual skills combined with the ability to drive results.
