Department Overview
The System Protection department is responsible for oversight of protection and control systems installed over a large geographic area of California, and owned by PG&E. The responsibilities include managing all aspects of 35,000 relays of various vintages including but not limited to asset planning, work scheduling, compliance, and application support.
The protection systems are also very diverse and include legacy systems installed more than 50 years ago and new integrated systems utilizing the newest relays of the latest technology and the latest relay communication techniques. The responsibilities include renewable generation interconnections for one of the fastest growing sectors in North America. PG&E is geographically located in a strategic area of California and WECC and has an extensive 500kV network that provides stability to the California and Western Interconnection. For this reason and many more it is important to maintain a highly skilled staff to provide oversight of the protection systems in PG&E.
Position Summary
The incumbent’s primary role is to apply protection subject matter expertise to conduct business with applicable laws, regulations, internal and external standards and guidelines. This includes maintaining a clear understanding of which regulatory standards and requirements must be complied with, and ensures that work processes incorporate best practices, standards, guidelines, and other controls. This position works closely with System Protection Engineering, Substation Test, Asset Strategy, Grid Operations, IT, Business Applications Development, and Transmission Compliance to support compliance-related reviews, lead business area teams on compliance projects, and may conduct root cause evaluations as needed in order to ensure controls are in effect for compliance and other System Protection processes and practices.
PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.
The hourly rate for this position ranges from $24.52 to $35.37
Responsibilities
- Collaborates with team to work on issues, projects or activities.
- Provides support and assists with the implementation process for project and/or program initiatives.
- Creates comprehensive and technical reports and develops business cases.
- Prepares letters, forms, reports, meeting summaries, presentations, memorandums, records and reference data using established formats.
- Develops data metrics and statistics and identifies data attributes.
- Documents data sources, data methodology and models evaluation metrics.
- Gathers information, prepares data and performs analysis on data models and presents findings. Produces models and actionable insights.
- Provides support for regulatory compliance activities.
- Tracks data and information and enters into tracking system.
- Compiles drawing search and inventory for programs and equipment specification information. Updates SAP asset registry
The successful intern will have the opportunity to lead and/or support activities as described above working with a team of experienced Program Managers. Additionally, the intern will gain knowledge of the larger Electric Substation System Protection organization through the work they will be performing.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a Bachelors or Masters Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Business Information Systems or job-related discipline in a full-time capacity at an accredited university.
- Must be continuing education and returning to school following the internship.
